What is a Payslip?

A payslip (pay stub or salary slip) shows an employee how their pay was calculated for a period: gross earnings such as salary, overtime and bonuses, the deductions for tax and social security, and the net amount paid.

What to include on a payslip

• Employer and employee. Names and addresses, the employer’s registration numbers and the employee’s ID or social security number.
• Pay period and pay date. The month or week covered and the date of payment.
• Position and employee number. The job title, the department and the internal employee number.
• Earnings. Basic salary, overtime, bonuses and allowances, each on its own line.
• Deductions and net pay. Social security, health insurance and income tax, then the net amount paid, also written in words.

How to make a payslip

1. Enter your business name, address and logo in "Your business". Save them as your default and they will be filled in next time.
2. Add the other party's details and the document number and dates. Numbers increase automatically.
3. List the items. Quantities, prices, taxes and totals update in the preview as you type.
4. Pick a template, colour and document language, then click "Download PDF" or "Print".

Payslip mistakes to avoid

• Using rates from an old year: social security and tax rates change, so check the current rates in your country.
• Leaving out the pay period or the pay date.
• Showing only the net amount: the employee must see how it was calculated.
