Type an amount, choose the currency and the language, and copy the amount written out in full. The wording follows the usual rules of each language: “quatre-vingts” and “mille” in French, lakh and crore for rupees, “فقط ... لا غير” and the correct agreement of the noun in Arabic.

Where to use an amount in words

Cheques, invoices, receipts, payslips, contracts and promissory notes often repeat the total in words. Writing it out makes the amount harder to alter and settles any doubt if the figures are unclear. On our invoice, receipt and payslip generators you can add the amount in words to the document with one tick.

Questions about the Amount in Words Converter

Why write an amount in words?

Figures are easy to change: a 1 becomes a 7, a zero is added. The amount in words is much harder to alter, so banks and accountants use it to confirm the true value. If figures and words differ on a cheque, many banks go by the words.

How do I write cents in words?

Write the main unit, then “and” followed by the cents: “one hundred twenty dollars and fifty cents”. Some countries write the cents as a fraction instead, for example “50/100” on Mexican cheques; the converter uses the usual form for each language.

Which languages and currencies are supported?

English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi and Indonesian, with the names of 20 common currencies such as the dollar, euro, dirham, riyal, dinar, pound, lira, rupee and real. Other currencies are written with their code.
