What is a Gift Certificate?

A gift certificate (or gift voucher) lets a customer offer your products or services to someone else. It shows the value or the service offered, who it is for, a unique code to prevent fraud and the date it expires.

What to put on a gift certificate

  • The value or the service. An amount (for example 500 dirhams) or a service such as “One 60-minute massage”.
  • Recipient and giver. Who the gift is for and who offers it make the certificate personal.
  • A unique code. Record each code when you sell a certificate so it can be used only once.
  • An expiry date. Say clearly until when it can be used, within the limits set by the law of your country.
  • Conditions. For example: not exchangeable for cash, booking required, one use only.

How to make a gift certificate

  1. Enter your business name, address and logo in "Your business". Save them as your default and they will be filled in next time.
  2. Add the other party's details and the document number and dates. Numbers increase automatically.
  3. List the items. Quantities, prices, taxes and totals update in the preview as you type.
  4. Pick a template, colour and document language, then click "Download PDF" or "Print".

Mistakes to avoid with gift certificates

  • Reusing the same code on several certificates, which makes fraud easy.
  • Leaving out the expiry date or the conditions, which leads to disputes.
  • Forgetting your contact details: the recipient needs to know how to book.

How should I number gift certificates?

Use a code that is hard to guess, such as GC-7K2Q-0419, and keep a list of the codes you sold and used.
